Service-Learning Coordinator
I’m the Service-Learning Coordinator. Three years ago Dr. Kasali asked me to come to UCBC to start the Service-Learning program. I accepted with joy. In the first year (2009-2010) it was really hard for people to understand what Service-Learning. However, once people participate in a service-learning project, they understand and love it. At UCBC we want to empower our students to be servant-leaders: orienting their work, ministry, and lives to benefit others. When they participate in Service-Learning they are connecting what they learn in the classroom to what happens in the community.
In the second year (2010-2011) of Service-Learning we learned from our mistakes in the first year and built on our success. In this year the interns strengthened the visibility of the Service-Learning Program by hosting a Promotion Week. The interns used their creativity, intelligence, and determination to explain how Service-Learning is essential to the UCBC leadership philosophy and the progress of Congo.In the third year (2011-2012), we are so glad to see UCBC teachers using Service-Learning in their classes. To date over 300 students have participated in a Service-Learning project. Teachers at UCBC continue to improve their Service-Learning proficiency through planning, research, community organizing, and leading reflection activities.
This year in Service-Learning we have another great team of interns. Here are their profiles:
REGIS HENRY MATHE
Applied Sciences Intern
Né à Goma le 24l11l1992, Régis Mathe Henry, Le Normand pour les autres, est un garçon qui a grandi à Goma où il a passé ses 17 années, jusqu'à décocher son diplôme d’état, par corolaire. De 2004 à 2007, il intègre le parlement d’enfants/Goma où il devint secrétaire de la sous -commission chargée d’hygiène, environnement et de la protection de la nature. Ainsi, la communauté devint sa passion.Arrivée à l’UCBC depuis 2010, il y intègre la Faculté des Sciences Appliquées, département du Génie Informatique ; Henry a pris connaissance d’un système éducationnel quasiment moderne qui marrie la théorie a la pratique via diverses descentes sur terrain. Cela arrive durant son premier cours à l’Université, le ‘DRC Realities’ ou ‘Réalités Congolaises’, selon qu’on est chez les Anglo-saxons ou chez les francophones. Ce nouveau système s’appelle SERVICE-LEARNING. L’écrivain Dalle Carnagie dit : << Seules les sciences mises en pratique restent encrées dans nos mémoires>>. C’est ainsi que le S-L l’a beaucoup plus marqué car départ même sa traduction, l’apprentissage par le service, ici on met en corrélation les connaissances apprises dans l’auditoire ou en classe avec les multiples réalités de la vie quotidienne au sein de la communauté en cherchant où modifier, ajouter ou supprimer pour appréhender un avenir radieux.Mathe finit par postuler au test d’internship de l’année 2011-2012 organisé par la coordination du S-L où il a été sélectionné et représente sa faculté. Grande est sa joie de se retrouver enfin dans un champ ou contexte lui offrant divers atouts pour son épanouissement dans le leadership.

Je m’appel Yves Asoma Epomao, né le 05/07/1990 et étudiant en L2 sciences Économiques a l’UCBC/Béni. Je suis ‘INTERN’au sein de Service- Learning pour développer mes connaissances et pour bien exercer mon leadership en travaillant avec les autres pour l’épanouissements de notre communauté afin de la faire sortir dans son état statique pour un état dynamique qui favoriserait son développement, son progrès et sa construction pour une vie meilleur de sa population.
Mon engagement de servir la communauté par l’intermédiaire de service-Learning est due suite à une conscientisation fait par notre Université afin de permettre une transformation de la société congolaise pour un avenir meilleur. Tout fois nous sommes limiter a des théories et nous manquons l’expérience parce que le pratiquons pas directement après avoir puisé les connaissances. C’est ainsi que le service-Learning nous aide à développer nos connaissances et nous fournir les expériences afin de bien servir notre communauté autraver nos apprentissages. C’est ainsi que ma candidature pour le service-Learning est de pouvoir servir ma communauté avec les connaissances acquises à l’UCBC.

Communications Intern
Née le 13 Aout 1992, Christina Kasoki Mukongoma est l’ainée d’une famille de deux enfants. Apres avoir fini ses études secondaireS en biologie-chimie, Christina a opté pour les sciences de l’information et de la communication dans le département de journalisme et multimédias au sein de l’Université Chrétienne Bilingue du Congo. A l’âge de 15 ans, Christina intègre La Radio-télévision Graben comme intern dans l’animation, puis dans le desk du journal parlé en swahili et en français et elle sera engagée une année après a la chaine Canal Congo Télévision comme animatrice et journaliste en plein temps. Christina a grandi dans un conteste de service, car déjà à l’âge de 8 ans elle allait, accompagnée de certains de ses amis de la chorale, visiter et rendre certains services aux prisonniers et de fois aux veuves et aux orphelins. Compatissante de nature, Christina se considère comme la voix des sans voix et le porte-parole des démunis. Sa passion pour le service a connu une grande ascension avec le cours de D.R.C. realities qui lui a permis de découvrir combien la RDC a besoin des leaders qui sont prêts à servir les autres dans le processus de sa transformation. Elle a encore plus été motivée par sa descente sur « EFATA » qui est une école des sourds et qui a été l’un des projets les plus réussit de sa promotion. Elle a choisi de participer au test du service Learning pour l’année 2011-2012, et grande fut sa joie d’être retenue pour représenter la faculté de SIC ; Ce qu’elle considère d’ailleurs comme une opportunité pour maximiser ses capacités à apprendre tout en servant les autres. Sans oublier le célèbre adage chinois : « si tu me donne un poisson à manger, je ne le mangerai qu’une fois, mais si tu m’apprends à pécher, je n’aurai plus jamais faim », Christina prend plaisir à aider les autres car il est très bien dit en Anglais, « Serving is learning twice ».

I am excited to work in Service-Learning because I have seen the benefits both for students and community development. Service-Learning can be a sustainable response to community needs.

I am one of the UCBC SL interns. My motivation to apply to SL was due to what has been burning in my heart. Since I haspiritually and in my domain: economics). What is burning in my heart is that I cannot keep those things I’ve learned just for myself. That why I believe that serving the community is the way for me to share what I have learned with the community, at the same timeI’ll learn from the community. Since I've been at UCBC, I have understood that my knowledge is growing everyday in different ways (socially, ethically, morally...).

As a student in the Theology and Leadership Department, my task is to research in order to know what is really wrong; to learn from each unique situation and then serve. Community Partnership and Project Support Specialist
Live your life and serve others.” This has been my natural ambition since my high school. I have not yet found something sweeter and very beneficial than giving and sharing my time, strength, intelligence, and materials to help others. Trust in what I say! “Serving others has all kinds of wealth you may desire and the secret is to start by volunteering”. It is unfortunate that, only few people around the world have discovered this.I love where I am, the Christian Bilingual University of Congo (UCBC) has taught me about serving others in my community. No matter if I’m living in abundance or not I have to serve. Being an intern in the Service-Learning program at UCBC is really helping me put into practice what I’m learning. I think with this we will make difference.
Community Partnership and Project Support Specialist
Service-Learning sharpens students’ community service skills. In class students are given theories; in labs they will test them. Theories will be useful when they will be applied in the community. If not, they are not worth to be taught. For, Service-Learning program helps students, when they still in the learning process, to gain experience in serving the community.
Personally, working in Service-Learning coordination (as an intern) will help me not only gain experience, but also increase my team work skills. The coordination works with students from different faculties: economics, communication, theology, applied sciences). Working with other students will enable me to have experience in my field as well as in many others. This is what I love the most in the UCBC Service-Learning program.
